TURNER, Ore. — Police rescued a 2-year-old girl who was held hostage for eight hours by a man accused of fatally shooting her mother.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says a SWAT team stormed an apartment in Turner, near Salem, Saturday morning after hostage negotiators were unable to convince the man to release the girl. Officers arrested the man, identified as 24-year-old Dustin Bryant.

The standoff began Friday night, when two Turner police officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance. They encountered a man and woman descending the stairs. Authorities say the man drew a gun and fired several shots toward the officers. He missed police but fatally shot the woman as she tried to run away.

Police say he returned to the apartment and refused to let the girl leave.
