Letter: Every issue balloons to a spectacle

The Board of County Commissioners’ discussion on Oct. 8 regarding the contract with the Humane Society for Southwest Washington would be considered a spectacle if it were not for the fact that it has been a seven-month process. Given the simplicity of the contract, and the history of the Humane Society with Clark County, the discussion moved from spectacle to travesty.

It would be wise for the commissioners to replay the meeting for some post-game analysis. David Madore could watch himself insist on bringing forth “the facts” and notice that the only fact he had in his back pocket was to allow some private agency to “do what it does best.” Tom Mielke could perhaps figure out whether his rambling comments were due to the fact that he didn’t understand what was going on, or caused by his struggle to defy Madore.

Ultimately an appropriate vote was taken to accept the contract without amendment. The travesty was that the public had to sit through an entire unnecessary hour of political wrangling.
