The Oct. 11 story about “Haves, Have-Nots” in high school sports proves what I’ve long suspected — high school sports have moved way beyond what can be justified as an aspect of a high school program established at taxpayer expense.
The solution to this problem is to move interscholastic sports off of the taxpayer plate. Let those who are really interested in seeing high school sports played at the level of play exhibited by successful school programs pay for that level of play via private club programs. Taxpayers can get what they pay for out of intramural programs at a much lower level of expense.
