NEW YORK (AP) — American Ryan Hall has withdrawn from next month’s New York City Marathon because of a hip injury.
The two-time Olympian also pulled out of this year’s Boston Marathon and last year’s NYC Marathon because of injuries. Hall said in a statement Tuesday that in his “zealous efforts to have redemption” he “overstepped” the need to stay healthy.
The 31-year-old Hall ran the fastest marathon by an American in finishing fourth in 2 hours, 4 minutes, 58 seconds in ideal conditions in Boston in 2011. Because of the course setup, it doesn’t count as a U.S. record.
He also was fourth in New York in 2009, when Meb Keflezighi became the first American in 27 years to win the race. Keflezighi is to run this year’s marathon, which is Nov. 3.
