NEW YORK (AP) — Mets ace Matt Harvey plans to visit Dr. James Andrews before deciding whether he will have reconstructive surgery on his ailing right elbow.

In his first public comments since Aug. 26, when the Mets said he had a partial ligament tear, Harvey said Tuesday he remains optimistic he can avoid surgery that would likely force him to miss all of next season.

Harvey says the swelling is down and that the pain subsided two days after he put a ball down. He will see Dr. Andrews on Monday.

The All-Star game starter for the National League joined Mets teammates David Wright and Zack Wheeler, along with Jeff Wilpon — the team’s chief operating officer — at a Manhattan firehouse in advance of the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on New York.
