FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Thomas Bach has resigned as head of Germany’s national sports body to assume his new role as International Olympic Committee president.

The German Olympic Sports Confederation said Monday that Hans-Peter Kraemer will serve the remainder of Bach’s term until December 2014 unless early elections are called for this December.

Bach was elected IOC president last week in Argentina, succeeding Jacques Rogge.

The German lawyer also is relinquishing his position on the court of appeals at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and resigning as president of the Ghorfa Arab-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Some Jewish groups contend the organization is anti-Israeli.

Bach will visit IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Tuesday.
