Letter: Obama’s ACA promises don’t add up

Democrats’ core values include justice, fairness and telling the truth.

In 2009, President Obama pledged “a guarantee … if you have insurance that you like, then you will be able to keep that insurance. If you’ve got a doctor that you like, you will be able to keep your doctor,” and in 2008, “for those who have insurance now, nothing will change … except that you will pay less.”

Sen. Maria Cantwell’s, D-Wash., website: “I am enthusiastic about the ability of this law to increase health care quality and affordability.” Sen. Patty Murray’s, D-Wash., website: “reform will ensure that Americans have access to quality, affordable health care.”

Obama, Murray and Cantwell can access plans for federal employees. One available is a Blue Cross family plan. Annual deductible: $700. Monthly premium: $536.23 for vision, dental, prescription drugs, mental health, $30 co-pay office visits.

My insurance provider forced me into a new Obamacare plan. The premium increased 40 percent to $4,800. Annual deductible: $10,500. No vision, dental, prescription drug, or mental health coverage. It covers less than today’s plan and excludes my wife’s doctor of 20 years. Competing exchange plans are no better.

Homework assignment: In 300 words or less, explain how these facts accord with Democrats’ core values. Extra credit: Explain why independent voters should support Democratic candidates in 2014.
