Letter: Credibility lessened by violations

Melinda Loomis, in a March 24 letter “All of us benefit from oil terminal,” stated that Tesoro is an “exemplary” company. No matter how one feels about the oil terminal, it should be known that Tesoro is not an exemplary company.

A research group ranks Tesoro as the 24th-largest air polluter in the United States.

Tesoro contributed more than $1 million to California’s Proposition 23 to suspend global warming issues.

In 2010, at the Anacortes refinery explosion that killed seven workers, it was found that Tesoro had 39 “willful” violations at the refinery. In 2010, their San Francisco Bay Area refinery had a large fire that triggered a “shelter in place” warning to nearby citizens. This refinery had 77 violations found.

Tesoro had switched to high-sulfur crude in California, which produces more toxics. In California, there have been two universities that claim Tesoro ranks worst in health impacts among refining operations in the state.

Don’t just state what Tesoro claims is its exemplary record — look up the facts yourself and make an informed decision on this company that wants to transport oil to Vancouver. Use your computer to Google Tesoro’s safety record and then decide how this “exemplary company” will treat our environment here.
