Letter: Be a good neighbor and recycle

In response to the April 4 news brief “County to host waste collection events,” recycling is a community project and yet many do not realize how important it is to both the society and the environment. The next generation and the future essentially depend on us, especially the values and the priorities we teach generations that will follow ours.

Clark County Environmental Services’ Green Neighbors program is doing a good job of promoting a safer and ecological environment. Electronics and household hazardous waste do not belong in the landfill where they contaminate the air, soil, and cause threats to the ecosystem.

Another great option would be to provide compost bins instead of throwing away food in the kitchen trash. Consequently, food waste can be used as compost in gardens and parks instead of rotting in the landfill; this would also help the ecosystem in sustaining its natural cycle. Bulk items such as refrigerators, old tires, and freezers should not be in the landfill. Those items can be used for other purposes or taken apart and recycled. People do not realize that the items they hastily and carelessly throw away in the trash actually damage the environment and ultimately our future. Washington and Oregon are beautiful states and should be kept that way.
