Letter: Nice weather adds a driving hazard

Every year around this time, we see an increase in the number of motorcyclists on the road. Also each year, we are inundated with requests and commentary on social media to pay attention and look out for them. By all means, we should be making sure we pay attention to motorcyclists and keeping the roads safe for them and other drivers. Yet, I’m horrified at the lack of common sense that some motorcyclists bring out onto the city streets each year. Most motorcyclists I see are driving and behaving perfectly safely, but there are always a few that I think are accidents waiting to happen.

A motorist’s responsibility is for safety to themselves and everyone else on the road, but I see motorcyclists weaving in and out of traffic, slipping into tiny spaces between cars, and even traveling between cars in adjacent lanes. Motorcyclists should be as concerned for their own safety as making sure car drivers are; it is their responsibility along with the cars they share the road with. The nice weather brings out more motorcyclists and we should all keep safety as our first priority.
