Letter: Take timeouts from school stress

Parents and college students, you need to cut each other some slack.

Parents, some (but not all) of you have set high academic expectations for your children in college because you want them to do well in life. Your intentions are good, but college students are already facing stress from a ton of homework on a weekly basis, from friends and from the desire to improve themselves. Many of you parents had difficulties and pressures in school and college, too, so please keep this in mind the next time you see your children struggling in college. They need your love and encouragement above all else.

Students, it is no secret that these personal and academic pressures (and lack of sleep) are tough. Please be aware, though, that your parents and professors, while imperfect, want you to be well-educated, to enjoy life and to make a positive impact on the world. Remember this: someone will always be there to love you and to help you through the tough times at college. Most importantly, remember to love each other and to forgive each other’s mistakes. “Peace on Earth” starts with peace in the family.
