Vancouver Public Schools is one of only nine school districts nationwide to receive the 2014 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools District Sustainability Award. The awards were announced by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Mike Boots, acting chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

The award recognizes achievements in reduced environmental impact and costs, improved health and wellness and effective environmental and sustainability education. The district was nominated by the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

In addition, 48 schools nationwide were honored for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education, including civics and green career pathways.
