Letter: Get details on proposed mine

The Gifford Pinchot Task Force has been working with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and communities of Southwest Washington since 2005 to prevent exploratory drilling for copper and gold 12 miles off the crater of Mount St. Helens. However, Ascot Resources Inc., a Canadian mineral speculation firm, has recently received permission from the federal government to conduct exploratory drilling within the Green River watershed, which provides clean drinking water for Southwest Washington communities.

As operations manager at the Gifford Pinchot Task Force, I invite the community to join us at 6:30 p.m. April 23 as we partner with Washington State University’s Center for Social and Environmental Justice to host award-winning author Bill Carter to discuss this proposed mine. Carter’s latest book, “Boom, Bust, Boom — A Story About Copper, The Metal That Runs the World,” highlights how the economic need for copper often results in a delicate and complex trade-off between modern civilization’s need for minerals and environmental protection.

WSU Vancouver is located at 14204 NE Salmon Creek Ave. This free event will be held in room VDEN 110. For more information, visit www.gptaskforce.org.
