Letter: Faith in mankind to save our world

The Columbian
Published: August 14, 2014, 12:00am

I was raised Catholic to believe that God was omniscient, omnipresent and all powerful. So at what time did the church decide to let God off the hook by introducing the idea of man having free will? Because if you’re going to place the blame on mankind (as I believe you can) that means that He is standing by and letting mankind cause all kinds of havoc with the only punishment being that they don’t get to live with Him. If one thinks about it, God gets all the credit and consequently should get all the blame, in my book.

Religion should not get all the blame either; it is what men do in the name of religion that is shameful. Religion just collects the tithes and distributes the money where it thinks it will do the most good (after it fills its own pockets). Religion provides comfort to those who yearn to know what their ending will be.

As for hope for the future, religion lacks certainty for me. I prefer to believe in mankind’s ability to see clearly what needs to be done and do it. Put your faith in yourself and know your own limitations and get out of bed and do it. Clean up our world and stop building war machines, now that would be powerful.
