Regarding the Aug. 8 editorial “Information Begins to Flow: Public should be aware of pollutants that are entering Columbia, Snake rivers,” I have no argument with more disclosure about pollutants released into the Columbia River. However, the editorial implies that the Corps of Engineers, and its dams, are the primary source of pollutants. Not true.
The outflow of sewage treatment plants from towns and cities all along the river is the largest source. Stormwater drainage from streets and parking lots everywhere within the Columbia River basin are another huge unmeasured source. Also, Canada houses unmeasured sources.
Further, the editorial implies that the oils and greases that drip from the machinery in the dams are unregulated. Again, inaccurate. The Corps of Engineers is required to report every observable leakage to the Environmental Protection Agency. You might ask the EPA.
When this newspaper informs us about what the Corps of Engineers puts into the river, show us all those other sources as well.
