Letter: Reiterate urgency for action

The Columbian
Published: August 30, 2014, 5:00pm

Thank you for publishing the Aug. 27 story “U.N. draft: Global warming human-caused, dangerous — Years of research should see final release in October,” about the report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This report should be disseminated continuously by all media outlets, print, Internet, television, etc. Although the report will go to all world governments, it also needs to be made available to citizens worldwide, through the Internet and bookstores.

The report specifically tells what needs to be done to help save the Earth. It is now the duty of citizens everywhere to force world leaders to act now and to make changes in their own lives. But citizens must be made aware of the urgency on a scale never attempted before.

This is not about religious or political ideology. The signs of global climate change have been everywhere recently. Example: melting of the permafrost in Siberia, which could release incredible amounts of methane, adding to global warming. Example: starfish dying by the millions off the Pacific coast of North America.

The world has enough know-nothings who refuse to educate themselves. Please keep this topic on the front page, because many people have a short memory, are easily distracted, or are apathetic.
