Above, Mohammed Alamin, left, and Doa Zhu of Illahee Elementary School’s Banana Bot team test their tech skills during a robotics competition on Sunday at Salmon Creek Elementary School. Their robot was built using Legos. Mohammed and Doa were among the hundreds of students from Washington and Oregon, ages 9 to 14, who competed in a regional robotics challenge on Saturday and Sunday at the school.

In other photos above (click arrow in photo window to see more), members of another team, Jake Fitzsimmons, Stephen Rooklidge and Braden Moore, watch others take a turn. Also, Anabel Jiang and Minwoo Dang of the Camas-area Lego Masterminds team inspect their robot during the contest.

The participating teams are part of the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League. Eight teams advanced to the next round, scheduled for Jan. 17 and 18 in Hillsboro, Ore.
