Two Vancouver residents were displaced late Wednesday after a marijuana-grow lamp in their garage malfunctioned and started a fire at their home in the Fishers Landing East neighborhood. No one was injured.

Vancouver firefighters extinguished the fire shortly after it was reported just after 11 p.m. in the 18700 block of Southeast 17th Street, said Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli.

The fire caused about $25,000 in damage to the garage and its contents. The residents used the garage to grow legal medicinal marijuana, Scarpelli said.

“The fire originated with the actual grow lights in the garage,” she said, adding that about 16 plants were consumed in the blaze.

Both of the home’s residents, a 25-year-old man and his mother, evacuated the home but were unable to sleep there after the fire. They went to stay with friends, Scarpelli said.
