SEATTLE — A dozen Seattle Police Department officers will soon be wearing body cameras while on patrol.

KOMO News reports that the cameras will be turned off when the officers are handling protests unless there’s a reasonable suspicion that a crime is being committed.

Department officials say the goal of the cameras will be to increase transparency and accountability. Officials say the footage can be used as evidence in criminal cases and to monitor officers’ behavior.

The department says if the pilot program is successful, cameras could eventually become standard issue for all patrol officers.
