Letter: All lives matter

The Columbian
Published: December 14, 2014, 4:00pm

Does anybody remember this little song? “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white, all are precious in his sight.” I grew up singing that song. I grew up not being racist.

Black lives matter. All lives matter. Maybe we should consider that more than the color of their skin affected these outcomes. In the cases of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, there was personal responsibility involved. Both men resisted arrest. I challenge anyone to have a confrontation with a person of any color, and not fear for their lives.

We have had weeks of protesting over two lives that did matter but protesters feel they have the right to destroy people’s property, to take away people’s livelihoods. Protesters don’t have the right to start fires, which is the ultimate disregard for life. You never know if someone will die in a fire.

Police officers’ lives matter, too. Officers never know what can happen when they respond. They risk their lives every day so that we can have some semblance of order in our communities. If approached by a police officer, whether innocent or guilty, be respectful and compliant to the officer’s requests. Never resist arrest.

Jesus loves the little children. Just remember, we are all his children.
