Clark hoop teams start tournaments with wins

Clark men knock off No. 1-ranked Spokane 82-68

At a tournament stacked with some of the NWAC’s top teams, the Clark College men’s basketball team showed they belong.

Clark, ranked No. 3 in the last NWAC coaches poll, knocked off No. 1 Spokane 82-68 on Thursday at the Clackamas Crossover in Oregon City.

Antony Dunn scored 17 points, Darrius Mathis had 15 points and six rebounds, and Evan Garrison had 11 points, six rebounds and nine assists for the Penguins (5-2).

“It was our most disciplined game of the year,” Clark coach Alex Kirk said. “We held them down defensively. And we were smart on offense.”

Spokane (8-4) entered the game averaging an NWAC-leading 96.7 points per game. Clark also held Spokane leading scorer Race Martin to five points. He averages 22.2 points.

Clark led by as much as 19 points in the second half.

Next up for the Penguins is Skagit Valley, which knocked off Clark in the quarterfinals of last season’s NWAC Tournament. They tipoff at 5 p.m. Friday.

The first-round win also guarantees Clark a placing game on Saturday. They will play at 1 p.m. or 3 p.m.

Women

Alexa Orcutt had a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds as Clark held off Everett 67-60 on Thursday at the Skagit Crossover in Mount Vernon.

Taylor Howlett and Caylee Newsom each had 17 points, and Howlett also had five assists for Clark (4-2), which used just six players.

Mountain View grad Emma DuChesne had eight points, six rebounds and four assists for Everett (5-7). Kali Long led the Trojans with 17 points.

Clark advances to play No. 1-ranked Umpqua (8-1) at 4 p.m. Friday. Clark is guaranteed a placing game on Saturday.
