NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has been studying foreign policy in advance of a potential presidential run.

Christie has spent hours participating in late-night conference calls with experts in recent months. The topics have included Ukraine and Russia, the Islamic State group and Iran.

The calls typically begin with several experts discussing the topic followed by a detailed question and answer sessions.

Advisers say the format is designed to expose Christie to multiple points of view and help him build a deeper understanding of history and world affairs.

Such preparation is to be expected from prospective White House candidates. But they are another indication of Christie’s political ambitions, even has he has been notably reluctant to share his views about policy issues outside his wheelhouse as governor.
