Washingtonians no longer have representation in the U.S. Senate. Democrat Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell abdicated their legislative responsibilities when they remained silent as the president, acting like a dictator, boasted that he had a pen and a phone and if Congress did not act, he would.
These senators, at the State of The Union address, applauded President Obama when he said he would act on his own and take steps without congressional approval. Murray and Cantwell, like witless automatons, applauded a man who just told them they were irrelevant. Their actions have told Washingtonians that they, the senators, no longer believe in the separation of powers. They have betrayed their oath to the Constitution and the people of Washington state.
Murray and Cantwell, regardless of who the chief executive is, should have objected to the reckless remarks of a power-hungry autocrat. They should resign or forfeit their salaries and perquisites.
Most troubling is that the so-called fourth estate, the media, which is supposed to be our guardian, has not challenged the power grab by the executive branch. The media, in most respects, is a parasitic and slavish ally of a Nixonian abuse-of-power president.
