PORTLAND — Gov. John Kitzhaber ordered flags at public institutions lowered to half-staff Monday in honor of a 22-year-old soldier from Portland who was killed in Afghanistan.

Specialist John A. Pelham was one of two soldiers killed Feb. 12 by small arms fire in Kapisa Province. They were assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, N.C.

KOIN reports the funeral is at 10 a.m. Monday at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints church in Beaverton, Ore. A procession will take Pelham’s body to Willamette National Cemetery in Portland for burial.
