Letter: Progress halted by party of ‘no’

The Columbian

A lot has happened to this country in the last 85 years. Families of five and six were common because contraceptives were not available and neither was sex education. Two males in a sexual situation received a two- to 14-year prison sentence in Indiana and in many other states. interracial marriage was forbidden and blacks could be lynched for just looking at a white woman. All of the South was segregated with “black only” and “white only” signs. A job paid a dollar an hour and there were millions of jobs to choose from and house payments were $7.50 per month. Movies were black and white and silent.

I never voted or was interested in politics until Ronald Reagan got elected president. I became infuriated when he fired the striking air traffic controller workers, rewarded the rich, destroyed the middle class and gave Jerry Falwell a seat at the dinner table. Politically, I am not so much for the Democrats, except it helps to ease my thorough disgust for Republicanism: Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, anti-global warming, anti-gay, anti-black, anti-brown, anti-abortion, anti-contraceptives, anti-interracial marriage, anti-same-sex marriage and anti-cooperating with a black president. They’re the party of “no.”
