Eversley, Cal Poly cruise past Hawaii 77-65

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) — Chris Eversley had 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists as Cal Poly raced past Hawaii 77-65 in a Big West Conference opener for both teams Thursday night.

The Mustangs (5-9, 1-0) jumped out to an early 21-6 lead as Kyle Odister hit two 3-pointers and added a layup.

Hawaii (11-4, 0-1) closed the first half on a 12-3 run sparked by 3-pointers from Brandon Spearman and Garret Nevels, cutting their deficit to single digits at the break, 41-32. Cal Poly regained a comfortable lead quickly as they opened the second half with a 10-2 run. Hawaii couldn’t pull closer than 11 the rest of the way.

Cal Poly shot 50 percent from the field and had four starters score in double figures. David Nwaba scored 17 points and Jamal Johnson had 15 with six assists.

Nevels led the Warriors with 16 points and Christian Standhardinger chipped in 15.
