LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Tomasz Gielo scored 17 points and Andrew Smith added 15 as Liberty defeated Campbell 71-68 Tuesday night.

The Flames (8-10, 2-1 Big South) trailed 20-19 in the first half, but surged ahead with a 21-5 run sparked by 3-pointers from John Caleb Sanders, Davon Marshall and Gielo.

Campbell (8-10, 2-1) stormed back in the second half to reclaim a 58-55 advantage, but Liberty pushed back to a six-point lead with 2:19 left. Ryan and Reco McCarter each hit 3-pointers to trim Campbell’s deficit to one.

After a split pair of free throws by Marshall, McCarter missed a go-ahead 3-pointer. Another Marshall free throw put Liberty up by three, and Ryan couldn’t connect from beyond the arc as time expired.

Liberty shot 46 percent from the field. Marshall had 12 points and Sanders added 10.

Ryan led the Fighting Camels with 22 points, and McCarter and Leek Leek each had 14.
