Ellsworth Springs — Even at 90 years old, Ellsworth Elementary School volunteer Belva Baz continues to pay weekly visits to the kindergarten class run by her daughter, Penny Baz, often with treats in hand. Belva began volunteering about seven years ago at the school. She talks with students, cleans up, sharpens pencils and does what she can around the class, said substitute teacher Karen Robbins, who appreciates Belva’s commitment to the school. “The whole staff loves her, especially her homemade goodies she often shares,” Robbins said.

When she was highlighted in a 2011 Columbian story, Belva laughed about a student describing her presence: “There are two Ms. Bazes in the room, and one of them has a lot of wrinkles.”
