Two elk walked onto Interstate 5 north of Woodland late Tuesday night, causing a crash involving five vehicles.

The northbound lanes of the freeway, about two miles north of Woodland, were closed for about 10 minutes following the crash, reported at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Will Finn.

The crash started when a tractor-trailer struck the animals, Finn said. Four following vehicles struck the remains.

The elk were killed, but no people were injured.

“Visibility was very poor at that time of night,” Finn said.

Crews with the Washington State Department of Transportation responded to the crash scene and disposed of the elk carcasses.
