Letter: Bookstore doing something right

The Columbian
Published: January 20, 2014, 4:00pm

I’m writing concerning the Jan. 15 business brief, “Powell’s Books investing $1 million in remodeling.”

Powell’s is spending $1 million on remodeling its store in Portland, at a time when many bookstores are struggling or closing. They are apparently doing something right. Powell’s is an example of a local business that can compete with the national chains. They are not trying to put other stores out of business. They have a strong and loyal local customer base because they have what customers want and because they support the local community. We need more businesses like this. And the community should support them with their patronage. There are hundreds of successful local businesses in Clark County that deserve our support.
