Letter: Awareness raised before balloting

Correction: Pay raises for members of the Vancouver City Council were approved by a salary review commission, not by council members themselves. A letter in “Our Readers’ Views” in Thursday’s paper included inaccurate information regarding the raises.

I’m responding to Editor Lou Brancaccio’s June 21 column “How does a $30,000 raise sound?,” where he informed us that our City Manager Eric Holmes recently got a raise of $30,000 per year.

In addition it has been reported that Vancouver Assistant City Attorney John Farra got a raise of 47 percent over the last year and the Vancouver city councilors voted to give themselves a raise.

This information is in contrast to most government workers who got raises of less than 1 percent, according to a recent study.

Since many city services have been cut because of lack of funds, how can these huge raises be justified?

Why this unreasonable sense of entitlement with our tax dollars?

I’m sure I won’t get my questions answered, but will have my say when voting.
