Letter: Campaign to reject oil terminal

The Columbian
Published: July 6, 2014, 12:00am

Gary Sachtjen’s June 28 letter, “It’s foolish to spar with the railway,” claims the people can’t win against power and wealth. If our forefathers believed that, we wouldn’t be the USA today.

The oil terminal is bad for Vancouver, our state and the world. To fight climate change we must wean ourselves off fossil fuels, instead of promoting it. If we don’t, the human species will be facing extinction. Trains hauling crude oil are using tank cars that are not safe; they tend to split open when derailed, and explode in fiery devastation. Even the new tank cars do not meet safety standards, putting our people, communities and the Columbia River at risk. Our beautiful waterfront project in Vancouver may not be built if the oil terminal is approved.

These are just a few reasons the oil terminal should not be built. I agree that it is hard to fight the fossil fuel industry, but it must be done. Future generations are counting on us. To help, sign this petition, campaigns.350.org/petitions/no-oil-train-terminal-in-vancouver-wa.
