Access may be limited in Major, Catherine creek areas

BINGEN — Helicopters are working in the upper Catherine and Major creek areas in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and access may be limited at times.

The helicopters are part of a landscape strategy to improve oak stands that have been topped by Douglas firs from decades of fire suppression.

According to the Forest Service, the project will reduce the risk of high intensity wildfires.

Helicopter activity this week is east of the upper Bates and Snowden road intersection. Activity then will move to the upper east fork of Major Creek for three weeks. The final work will be near Major Creek road and Catherine Creek north of the east end of Bistol Road for three weeks.
