SEATTLE — Thousands of people gathered in downtown Seattle on Sunday for the city’s 40th annual Pride Parade.

This year’s theme — “Generations of Pride”— honored civil rights battles in the city that elected its first openly gay mayor in November.

Actor George Takei, who played in the “Star Trek” TV show and movies and is now an activist for gay and civil rights, was celebrity grand marshal of the Seattle parade.

A surprise addition to the parade was Grammy-winning Seattle rap artist Macklemore.

The pride celebration included a day of concerts at three different locations around Seattle, a “doggie drag” costume contest and thousands of people who are dressed up as well.

The parade was expected to be the largest in Seattle Pride history, with an estimated 200 groups participating.
