Letter: Earn a raise, don’t demand it

Why should we raise the minimum wage? Why should we reward people with few job skills with more money? What makes these workers think they are worth more than the current minimum wage? Higher wages go along with more education and higher-risk jobs, not selling burgers or bagging groceries.

I understand that what these folks are making is not a living wage. However, these minimum-wage jobs are starter jobs, somewhere to learn a few job skills, then go on to bigger and better things. True, those bigger and better things are not as readily available right now, but if you can’t afford to live off one job, go get another job.

Consumers are already suffering, or soon to be, the effects of Obamacare, gas prices and other things beyond our control. These same folks who can’t afford a full tank of gas want more money per hour. What they don’t realize is that this will cause the price of things to go up even higher, so they still will not be able to afford the things they can’t afford now.

Those with minimum-wage jobs need to earn a raise. I went to college and spent my hard-earned dollars to get a degree. I studied hard. I have earned my pay, not because I think I am entitled to it, but because I worked hard for it.
