BOY SCOUTS SILVER BEAVER AWARD

Three local volunteers in the Fort Vancouver District of Boy Scouts of America have received the Silver Beaver Award, which is the highest national award presented by a local council. They are: Alan Davison, Ron Murphy and Clarence Prestwich.

Davison, with Troop 328, is assistant district commissioner with the Fort Vancouver District. He dedicates much time to recruiting Cub Scout-age boys in the community.

Murphy, with Venture Crew 511, is unit commissioner and involved with the unit's high adventure program.

Prestwich, with Varsity Team 25, has been active in four Boy Scout councils and five districts around the U.S., as scoutmaster, assistant scoutmaster, and varsity coach.

DECA COMPETITION

Business students from Western Washington University took top honors at the 2014 Collegiate DECA Pacific Northwest Career Development Conference recently in Seattle. Among them was Liz Reynolds of Vancouver, who won third place in hospitality.

GREEN RIBBON STATE FINALIST

Vancouver Public Schools was has been named a state finalist and nominee for a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon District Sustainability Award. Vancouver Public Schools and two other districts in the state were nominated by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. The award recognizes reduced environmental impact and costs, improved student and staff health and wellness, and effective environmental and sustainability education.

INTERPRETER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Tami Grant, Washougal High School American Sign Language instructor, has been recognized as Sorenson Communications 2013 Interpreter of the Year for her contributions to the deaf community. She is employed with Sorenson Communications, the largest employer of ASL interpreters. Outside of her work with Sorenson, she is a full-time ASL high school teacher. She directs four productions annually, allowing students to show their skills to the community. Grant is the first interpreter from the Northwest Region, with more than 30 centers, to be named Interpreter of the Year.
