My mom passed away in August. Her lung cancer recurrence was diagnosed in May and progressed with terrifying speed. At her funeral I shared “10 Things I Know About My Mom.”

I often have my students write 10 Things I Know About My Mom for Mother’s Day. It’s based on my favorite children’s book “Because of Winn Dixie.” I have lived with my mom or next door to her for 38 years so I feel like I know her better than anyone.

10 Things I Know About My Mom:

  1. She had a big heart and because of that, a wide circle of friends.

  2. She was beautiful and stylish, whether she had brown, red, grey, or white hair.

  • She would have made a great teacher. She loved the children she worked with at my school and in her Sunday school class.

  • She was smart. She could add a string of numbers together before I could put them in a calculator.

  • She was a tad bit stubborn and strong-willed. Because of that she was able to quit smoking cold turkey, give up chocolate for lent, and really do anything she put her mind to.

  • She was a multi-tasker. She worked full time, worked out daily, kept the cleanest house in town, gardened, had multiple hobbies, and time with friends and family.

  • She was a talented seamstress. She sewed her own outfits from the time she was a teenager. She sewed her wedding dress, clothes for her family, fluffy dresses for Ashley, baton outfits for me and my teammates, bridesmaids dresses, and even hemmed my pants until last year because the sewing gene did not pass down to me.

  • She was constantly knitting while I was growing up. I still have scarves she knit for me, and baby dresses with matching sweaters and bonnets she made for Ashley. I have friends who saved baby sweaters she made for their babies. That gene skipped a generation as well.

  • She was competitive. If you have ever played a board game, cards, racketball, or charades against her you know how competitive she was!

  • Although she had many trials, especially during the war, she had a great life. She told me that she was ready for Heaven because she had a great life and had been blessed with two great husbands.
