Philip D. Harr, in his May 7 letter “An appeal to Republicans’ humanity,” posed the question can Republicans claim to be Christians … if they cut food stamps rather than feed the hungry? If they repeal Obamacare? If they oppose increases in minimum wages instead of helping the poor? If they cut taxes for the wealthy instead of disparaging the rich as did Christ? And if they market a message of hate, especially of our president and anyone different from them, rather than loving thy neighbor?
I will not judge my neighbor’s faith by their political affiliation but what if Harr is spot on? What does that mean, for example, for the re-election of Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, who may no longer represent the majority of us? Or the re-election of Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader from Kentucky, who prides himself in being “the guardian of gridlock?” Or how about Oregon senatorial candidate Monica Wehby, who has made opposition to Obamacare the touchstone of her campaign? Yet, she is a physician.
I plan to do whatever it takes to elect Democrats to office on every level. Not because they are Democrats, but because Republicans have betrayed our sacred trust. We know that billionaires and corporations will try to buy the 2014 election. They will fail, however, because now is the time for we the people to return to We the People.
