Letter: Feds should hone operations

I read with interest the Nov. 15 article “U.S. nuclear woes: Pentagon chief Hagel orders a shake-up” on nuclear facilities in the United States. Having spent 11 years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a surgeon, including one year in Vietnam, I follow “all things military” closely.

We spend $15 billion a year to maintain these facilities in North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Despite this, there was only one set of wrenches to tighten the nose bolts on our Minuteman missiles. This necessitated using Federal Express (a private company) to ship the wrenches between the three states. How poorly managed is this? As a Clark County physician, I thought to myself: “If this is how the government runs things, God help our health care system.”
