Letter: Financially, fee waiver is failing

The Columbian
Published: November 22, 2014, 12:00am

The fee waiver for commercial building permits was a campaign promise and, as such, was not well researched. It was also a campaign promise that was kept. Now, after two years, the audit comes along to show the effects of the fee waiver. The audit is a research project and a source of information for everyone, especially the commissioners.

The facts show that the fee waiver program did not accomplish its stated goals and is financially unsustainable. This is information. It should be used. Any competent auditor, given the same numbers, will reach the same conclusion.

So, let’s not waste more taxpayer money on another audit. The information is there. Any commissioner who was concerned with the well-being of the county would use that information to make the changes that it shows need to be made.
