Letter: Charter increases representation

The Columbian
Published: September 30, 2014, 5:00pm

Regarding the Sept. 25 Columbian online article “Money spent on county recycling ads before OK was given: Benton, environmental services chief, says mistake was made,” I would suggest that this type of “error” (along with a few other “errors” that have occurred over the last several years) may not have occurred had the proposed Clark County charter been in force.

All of these “errors” have, for the most part, happened because of the very dubious “management” style and practices found at the highest levels of authority on the current Board of Clark County Commissioners and in at least one county department. I believe the proposed charter will help to reduce the chances of these types of errors from occurring in the future through the proposed and much needed separation of powers, the increase in citizen representation, a more professional and stable method of day-to-day management, and the restoration of personal accountability, all as is fully described in the charter.
