SALEM, Ore. — A West Salem High School choir teacher faces a felony hit-and-run charge for leaving the scene of a collision with an 8-year-old boy who suffered a broken leg.
Police say 52-year-old Kimberly McConnell failed to help the boy, provide information and wait for an officer.
The Statesman Journal reports the incident happened Sept. 19 and McConnell was arrested Sept. 23, then released on bail from the Polk County Jail.
Her lawyer, Walter Todd, said the crash was unavoidable when the boy skateboarded into the rear of her car. Todd says McConnell’s husband remained at the scene while she took her own son to the high school and immediately returned.
A witness who was a nurse took the boy to Salem Hospital.
