What are the fates of TV’s ‘Hostages,’ ‘Parenthood’?

Is “Hostages” coming back? I noticed that Dylan McDermott is going to star in “Stalker.” Was that the one and only season of “Hostages”?

Hostages has ended after a single season. “Stalker,” a repellent drama with McDermott and Maggie Q, begins its inaugural season on CBS on Oct. 1.

I am a big fan of “Parenthood” and long ago of “Everwood.” Are there ever going to be new shows? “Parenthood” ran quite a long time but “Everwood” seemed like a short season.

“Parenthood” will begin its final season on NBC on Sept. 25. “Everwood” aired for four seasons before ending in 2006. I know of no plans for a revival of it.

Please tell me the name of the child actor who plays Halle Berry’s son Ethan on the CBS show “Extant.” He is so terrific and will he be on any other TV shows in the future? He looks like my son when he was that age.

Pierce Gagnon plays young Ethan Woods on the CBS drama, which concluded its first season on Sept. 17. Born in Atlanta, he has been in the movie “Looper,” on the TV series “One Tree Hill” and in Zach Braff’s recent film “Wish I Was Here.” He has two other movies awaiting release: “Merry Friggin’ Christmas” (with the late Robin Williams), coming later this year” and “Tomorrowland,” due in 2015.

Years ago, a TV show followed the storyline of Rex Stout and his Nero Wolfe detective. As I remember it, Mr. Cannon played Nero Wolfe and I don’t remember the man who played his secretary/go-fer. I always enjoyed the Rex Stout books, and am reading the old books as I find them. Were those old shows ever distributed on DVD? And if not, why not?

“Nero Wolfe,” which aired on NBC in 1981, starred William Conrad (TV’s Cannon) as Wolfe and Lee Horsley as his associate Archie Goodwin. I do not know of an authorized DVD release, nor the reason why. It may be that the show was not popular — and that there was a later, somewhat more successful “Nero Wolfe” on A&E in 2001-02. Maury Chaykin played Wolfe in that show, with Timothy Hutton as Archie; the entire series, and its pilot movie, have been released on DVD.

Of course, that’s not the end of screen adaptations. Edward Arnold played Wolfe in the 1936 movie “Meet Nero Wolfe,” with Lionel Stander as Archie; 1937 saw “The League of Frightened Men,” with Walter Connolly as Wolfe and Stander again playing Archie. According to the Wolfe Pack (www.nerowolfe.org), a website devoted to the character, there were also Italian, German and Russian versions. That gives you just a taste of how Stout’s tales and characters have endured across media.

I am hooked on “Castle.” I don’t know where I’ve been the last six seasons. Thankfully, TNT reruns episodes and I’m binge-watching. How popular is the show? Season 7 is upon us and yet I’ve seen no promos. Is it because the show does not need promos or does ABC not care much for the show?

The series starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic has been a steady performer for ABC since its premiere in March 2009, fitting nicely with reality-TV lead-ins like “Dancing With the Stars.” “Castle” begins its seventh season on Sept. 29, with fans awaiting resolution of the sixth-season cliffhanger. And, all you fans, don’t worry when you see new ABC series “Forever” in the “Castle” time slot on Sept. 22. That’s a special preview of “Forever” hoping to get some of that DWTS audience; the Ioan Gruffudd drama will then move into its regular time slot at 10 p.m. Tuesdays on Sept. 23.
