HILLSBORO, Ore. — Police in the Portland suburb of Hillsboro say an 82-year-old woman who was seriously injured when a freight train struck the car in which she was riding has died.

The Oregonian reports that Sgt. Eric Bunday said the woman died at OHSU Hospital in Portland. Her name was not released Friday.

Authorities say the woman and the 85-year-old male driver got stuck in the car between downed railroad crossing arms. The driver reportedly suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries Thursday.

The Portland & Western Railroad train couldn’t come to a complete stop and hit the passenger side of the vehicle, pushing it about 100 feet.

Hillsboro police spokesman Lt. Mike Rouches said the railroad crossing arms and flashing lights were apparently working properly.
