Stolen bike back with owner

A $3,000 racing bicycle is back with its rightful owner after it was stolen from a Rose Village garage earlier this week.

David Godfrey woke up about 6:20 a.m. Monday morning to find that someone had broken into his garage in the 3000 block of L Street and stolen two bicycles, according to Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp.

One of the bikes stolen was a Cannondale track bike worth about $3,000. Godfrey took to Craigslist, posting that the bike was missing.

Meanwhile, a second man, whose name was not released, was approached on the street by a man who said he was selling the bike for $250, Kapp said. The second man bought the bike and realized later that it was probably stolen.

The second man went on Craigslist and found Godfrey’s post and contacted him. Vancouver police assisted in returning the bike the following day to Godfrey.

Kapp said police have no reason to believe that the man who purchased the stolen bike was involved in the burglary or theft. She said he “did the right thing by being honest,” but added that “it’s not a good idea to buy things from people off the streets. It’s likely stolen property.”
