Letter: Hyperbole mutual rhetorical device

In her Oct. 2 column “Dems’ criticism of GOP’s ‘war on women’ hypocritical,” Kathleen Parker criticizes the term “war on women” now used in politics. Parker lets us know she respects nothing but facts in conversation and deplores anything that resembles hyperbole. Good for her.

How about “war on Christmas”? Fox News coined this term years ago and visits the topic every December. War on Christmas indeed. You might think they are pandering to their viewers. You might think they are trying to goose them and manipulate their emotions. You might even think that this solemn news organization is wallowing in hyperbole, perish the thought.

Parker appears to be selectively indignant about use of their rhetorical gimmick. If a news media outlet can freely indulge in hyperbole, why would anyone carp about it in political slogans? Please try to be serious if possible.
