Letter: Keep festival apolitical

I am an enthusiastic supporter of the Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival and believe it is the finest musical event the Pacific Northwest has to offer.

I want to express my respectful disappointment, however, that Lynda Wilson, a candidate for the 17th Legislative District representative, Position 1, was able to obtain a promotional table this year through her business, DeWils, which was a first-time corporate sponsor.

DeWils is a valued local company and it is generous of them to donate to the festival. I wonder, however, if the festival staff expected DeWils’ booth to promote its fine products and not the political candidacy of its owner. It seems like a bait-and-switch tactic that stained the reputation of this superb musical, arts, and food event.

One of the reasons I love live music and cherish the Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival is its ability to bring diverse people together with good will and fun. For one weekend, we can leave our politics at the door and join together to enjoy music, a universal language that unites, not divides us.

I urge the Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival organizers to initiate some guidelines next year so other corporate sponsors will not be able to sneak in a political promotion as part of their donation.
