Canceled class spells chagrin for WSUV

Sign about English writing class includes spelling error

Oops! Students at Washington State University Vancouver were alerted by this note that their freshman English writing class was called off Monday:

“Attention

English 102.01 face to face meeting is cancaled today

Please check your WSU email for instruction.”

How did the error happen? And for a one-credit course that, according to the university’s website, indicates “a need for structured assistance with at least two of the characteristics of academic writing”?

“A staff member in the College of Arts and Sciences crafted the note,” Brenda Alling, university spokeswoman, wrote in an email. “She is humbled and embarrassed, but just didn’t catch the error in time. It happens — even at a university.”

The minor spelling error pales in comparison to the gigantic faux pas made at WSU’s Pullman campus two weeks ago, when new students were handed an academic planner inadvertently featuring a photo of Miller Hall on the campus of its rival, the University of Washington.
