If you’ve never attended a Girls Night Out event in Camas, you’re missing out on something very special.
The event, which at its core aims to educate women about breast cancer, began five years ago and year-after-year has grown to become one of the downtown area’s signature fundraisers. In 2013, more than 200 women flocked to downtown Camas to where they had the opportunity to have some fun — shopping, dining, and receiving beauty treatments — and become educated about issues surrounding breast cancer awareness and diagnosis. They can also get inspired by listening to compelling survivor stories, and paying tribute to the survivors and victims of the disease that will impact 1 in 8 U.S. women during the course of her lifetime.
This year, Girls Night Out will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, from 5 to 9 p.m.
A portion of the proceeds will once again benefit the Pink Lemonade Project. It is an organization started by Camas doctors Allen and Cassie Gabriel that provides critical emotional and psychological support to women impacted by breast cancer. It offers healing retreats, breast restoration advocacy and a peer to peer support program.
Some of the funding generated during GNO this year will also support the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Oregon and Southwest Washington. It’s a cause that is close to the hearts of many in the local community, as Camas Farmer’s Market coordinator Marilyn Goodman died in August after a long battle with the disease. Girls Night Out will include a special tribute to Goodman.
