Letter: Uphold punishment to full sentence

There is no justice in America. Growing up in Vancouver I was taught by my good parents and teachers to observe and obey the law because laws protect people. But I have learned that this isn’t actually the case. Some laws protect some people some of the time.

On Sept. 15, a twice-convicted felon with 18 prior misdemeanors will be released into society. Why you ask? Because those laws I was told to observe and obey growing up don’t really have any severe penalties for disobeying them.

Why don’t felons do 10 years minimum in jail in the state of Washington? Very simple: money. It’s cheaper to the state to let convicted felons re-offend than to hold them in jail.

Why do we allow our government to get away with this? Because a majority of the voters want schools and roads and hundreds of social services that the state provides.

Crime and punishment isn’t really a problem, until you are violated. Only when you are a victim does the punishment really matter.

Quit victimizing others, uphold the law, make all felons serve a 10-year minimum sentence. Make there be punishment for committing crime.
